Answering a scenario question never grants field approval, changes any worker classification, or unlocks dispatch. Practical assessment, task approval, and job assignment are separate decisions made by people, per task and per job. This course awards no industry certification and does not make anyone “qualified.”

Lesson 1 of 6

Know the defined scope, and know when to stop

Every piece of field work starts with a defined scope: what work is included, where it happens, and what is explicitly excluded. The scope is the agreement between the customer and the people doing the work, and it is the boundary you work inside.

When you meet something the scope does not cover, such as an energized enclosure, an unknown cable, or equipment that is not listed, the correct move is to stop and report it. Stopping is not a failure. Working past the scope without authorization is.

Scenario checkDuring a documentation survey of one control panel, you notice a damaged cable on a nearby machine that is not in your scope. What do you do?

Record identifiers exactly, and never guess

Field records run on identifiers: equipment tags, cable IDs, port numbers, terminal numbers. Other people will make decisions from what you write, so an identifier must be copied exactly as printed or labeled.

When a marking is worn, missing, or ambiguous, record that honestly: "no label visible" or "illegible after position 3" are good records. A guessed identifier is worse than none, because it looks trustworthy and sends the next person to the wrong place.

Separate observations from confirmed connections and measured results

Field records come in three strengths. An observation is what you can see. A confirmed connection is one that has been traced or verified end to end by an agreed method. A measured result is an instrument reading, recorded with the method and units that produced it.

Mixing these up is how bad documentation happens. Label each record with what it actually is, and never let an observation quietly upgrade itself into a confirmation.

Scenario checkBoth ends of a cable appear to run between panel A and switch 2, so you are tempted to write "confirmed connection." What is the correct record?

Photograph with permission, and protect plant information

Photographs are evidence, and they are taken only with the customer's permission. Frame them to the subject the scope requires: the port, the label, the termination. Keep unrelated process data, screens, documents, and people out of the frame.

Plant information stays protected after the shutter closes too. Photos move only through the approved storage and sharing channels, and they never go to personal accounts or public posts.

Know what each cable test can and cannot establish

Different tests answer different questions. A continuity check shows a conductor path exists. A wiremap test shows conductors land on the correct pins. Loss and OTDR measurements characterize attenuation and events along a fiber. Standards-based certification measures a link against a published standard with a calibrated instrument and produces a formal report.

A test establishes only what its method measures. The word "tested" means little without the method, the instrument, the recorded result, and the applicable acceptance criteria.

Hand over complete work, and escalate missing evidence

A handover tells the next person exactly what was done: the identifiers recorded, the measurements taken with their methods, the approved photographs, and the questions still open. It is complete when someone who was not there can act on it.

Missing evidence is escalated, not smoothed over. An explicit "unknown" or "not documented" entry with a reason and a next step is a valid record; a silent gap or an invented value is not.

Scenario checkAt handover you realize two of twelve ports were never reachable, so no photos or readings exist for them. What goes in the handover?
